GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Firefighters are battling a fire at a Grand Rapids restaurant.

The blaze started around 10 p.m. Friday at Little Mexico Cafe at 401 Stocking Avenue NW.

The business owner told 24 Hour News 8 “it was a packed house” at the time. Everybody got out of the building safely and there are no reports of injuries.
Flames were shooting out from the building and there was heavy smoke in the area as firefighters continued to douse the building with water.

The structure is older, which made it more difficult for the eight firefighter crews to fight the fire. It took more than three hours for the fire to be extinguished.

A portion of the northeast corner of the building collapsed.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire. There was speculation that fireworks from the Celebration on the Grand event in the downtown area sparked the blaze. But firefighters say that isn’t the case. They say the fire may have started in the kitchen of the restaurant.

The owner told 24 Hour News 8 the fire may have started on the second floor, with possibly a spark coming from the kitchen on the first floor.

Brad Burke is with the Farmers Insurance Group and the insurance agent for the property. He told 24 Hour News 8 office and storage space occupied the second floor of the building. He said an air conditioning unit was in the process of being installed in the building.
